Hope everyone had a relaxing spring break. It is now time for the final 3 months of school. In case you didn't know yet, we are here until June 22nd.
Here is what is coming up in the next two weeks:
Reading This week we are working on more non-fiction texts. Particularly we will focus on a few informational texts about the Oregon Trail. This is an introduction to our big social studies unit at the end of the year, which will focus on the Oregon Trail and Oregon's Native American tribes. Word Work: Words with the suffix -ful and SBAC At the end of this week and the beginning of next week we will practice the English Language Arts Performance Task in class. This is the assessment that integrates reading and writing, in which students write 3 short answers and an essay using 3 sources that they have read. Our practice in class is mostly focused on helping students interpret and follow the directions and navigate the three sources that go along with the assessment. Writing This week we begin a new we

This week we will be wrapping up March with the conclusion of a number of long term projects. Important events in the near future:
Reading This week in reading we will do an SBAC (this is the name of our state testing) scavenger hunt, to learn about the tools, navigation and directions on the test. We will also go to the computer lab to do an official practice. Students will also continue to work on their novel studies in reading groups, book commercials and non-fiction texts. Word of the Week: Support Word Focus: Words with the prefixes un- and re- Writing This week all students will finish publishing their country reports. It is exciting for students to see the final product of their long hard work. These books are turning out nicely. They include multiple sections, colored pictures, tables of contents and glossaries. Science This week we will test our Capitol Building models. Students have built new designs for the Capitol building that they think will withstand our shake test because of their dimensions, materials and other design features. Students have already begun team reports about their models. After our shake test data is collected students will be able to finish their team reports. Check out the handouts below that both came home this week.
This Thursday, March 16th, 6:30-7:30 is 4/5 fine arts night. Come enjoy a musical performance from your student as well as a showing of their art work.
Other upcoming notables: -Wednesday, March 22nd, Mrs. Gosser will be hosting an information session for parents about State Testing in the Library from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. -March 27th to March 31st is spring break. There will be no school. Reading This week we continue to focus on informational text. Students will focus on comprehending and writing about a text with a cause and effect strucutre. Over the past weeks it has been exciting to see students reading text more closely and referring back to it to cite evidence as they answer questions and respond to prompts. This focus continues this week. Word Work Focus: Compound Words Word of the Week: Evidence Book Commercial: Most students are wrapping the reading part of this project and are on to script writing. Writing This week students will revise, edit and begin to publish their informational country books. The goal is to have these books published before spring break. Social Studies Our study of Oregon History continues this week. Last week we learned about explorers and mountaineers who traveled West. This week we learn about a different group who also played a role in westward expansion: Missionaries. Science This week students will finish constructing their model capitol buildings. We may even be able to perform our shake tests by the end of the week. Have a great week! March is so funny. Last week we learned from one of our students about the Bulgarian Holiday of Baba Marta. This is one of many global holidays and traditions that describe March as a month that ends winter and begins spring, and thus is a little wild. I hope this week finds you well. It will be a busy productive week here at Hoover.
Here is what's going on: -If you are interested in supporting Hoover with your belly dine out at Block 15 on Tuesday Night. -March 9th is our Family Science Night from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. -Chess Club is on Tuesday Nights 6:15-7:30. -This week is classified appreciation week. If you you see any of our support staff this week, thank them for what they do! -All students across the school are practicing the THINK strategy. This strategy helps us all to remember to THINK before we speak in order to make sure the things we say are True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary and above all Kind. Practicing this strategy at home is a great way to help kids become thoughtful speakers everywhere. Heads up for next week: -4/5 Fine Arts Night is Thursday March 16 from 6:30-7:30. All students should be in attendance. Reading In reading this week we will do our next Oregon/Westward movement pocket. This is part of our study of non-fiction text and Oregon History. As students read these texts they are practicing close reading strategies. They are also working on citing evidence from the text as they answer questions. In the past I have neglected to share about some of the word learning activities we do. Recently we have been studying a wide variety of prefixes and suffixes. We also study academic vocabulary. Here are our focuses this week: Word of the Week: Characteristics Word Work Focus: words with the suffix "able" Writing This week students are working on drafting and revising their country informational report. As we work on drafting and revising we will particularly consider: interesting introductions, strong endings, does our writing make sense, have we included enough information, and does it make my reader curious? Science This week students continue to work on building their retrofit models of the capitol building. The building is progressing nicely and they will likely be ready for shaking by the end of next week. Read Aloud Last week we finished reading Inside Out and Back Again as our class read aloud. As we read this story of a young Vietnamese girl's experience of immigrating to Alabama after the Vietnam War we learned a bit about our nation's history and how the immigrant experience has changed overtime. We also enjoyed learning many Vietnamese words and about Vietnamese culture. This week we will select a new Read Aloud book, stay tuned for more information! |
